James F. Buchanan, a native Texan, has weighted his 30-year legal career toward maritime law interspersed with cases dealing with a broad range of legal matters. Following a two-year clerkship with the U.S. District Court in Corpus Christi, he decided to join the Kleberg Law Firm in 1973 to practice maritime law. In August 2003, he and his partners formed Welder Leshin, LLP.
His goals as an attorney are to be responsive to his clients’ needs and resolve issues in a manner that most closely meets his client's circumstances, whether through negotiation, trial or an alternative form of dispute resolution. Mr. Buchanan became a mediator certified by the Center for Public Policy Dispute Resolution at The University of Texas School of Law.
Mr. Buchanan handles all types of maritime claims and has represented international oil exploration and producing companies which led to the handling of oil and gas lawsuits, including royalty disputes, drainage claims, and take-or-pay claims. He also has dealt with a wide variety of personal injury claims including those against trucking companies and claims for contractual indemnities and insurance coverage issues. Mr. Buchanan's practice also includes the defense of toxic tort cases.
Mr. Buchanan enjoys the collegiality of Welder Leshin, LLP and the collaborative way in which attorneys practice. He has two sons, and enjoys bird hunting and is an avid golfer.
